Some interesting facts about Lviv

  • 1585 – the printing house of Assumption Brotherhood was founded. It is the oldest printing house in the Eastern Europe which is still functioning today.
  • 1715 – the first brewery in Ukraine was founded in Lviv.
  • 1784 – the Archive of Old Acts was founded in the Bernardine Monastery. Today it bears the name of the Central State Historical Archive in Lviv, and is one of the richest archives in Europe.
  • 1894 – one of the first electrical trams in Ukraine and in Europe started operating in Lviv.
  • Beginning of the 20th century – Lviv was the only city of the world which held the residences of three Catholic archbishops: Roman Catholic, Greek, and Armenian Catholic.
  • 1932 – the largest organ in Ukraine, manufactured in Czechia, was installed in the church of Maria Magdalene.
  • 1998 – Lviv was included in the list of cultural and historical heritage of UNESCO.
  • May 14-15, 1999 – Lviv became the only city in Ukraine which hosted a summit of nine leaders of Eastern and Central European states.
