English Summer School

Christmas

The annual Carpathian English Summer School (ESS) is an intensive English immersion course held in a picturesque site in the Carpathian Mountains which provides opportunities for spiritual growth, serious work and fun. The ESS is an important project jointly sponsored by the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) and the Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation. Its primary objectives are to enable students to immerse themselves in an English speaking community in order to become fluent English speakers and to create a prayerful, retreat-like environment in keeping with Eastern Christian traditions.

Students’ impressions of the ESS

Anna Maksymovych and Marianna Kaspryshyn:

“These were the best days in this summer for us. ESS is a good chance to improve your English. These are 21 days of interesting classes, funny games and competitions. In ESS you can find a lot of good friends and interesting people. These are active evenings in the surrounding of good people.”

Adriana Havryshkevych:

“ESS is the most beautiful place for studying and relaxation. I found a lot of friends there and I felt that improved my English. I had very nice, merry, witty teachers. Every day in the morning I studied, but in the evening I went for a walk to the mountains. There was wonderful landscape. I am very glad that I had the opportunity to be in this camp. It’s also great that now I have a lot of American friends.”

Kmyta Olha:

“In summer the students of Ukrainian Catholic University had possibility to improve their knowledge of English in the English Summer School. …A lot of students could communicate with our teachers (who were from other foreign countries) on different topics. The most successful, in my opinion, was the program of lessons, because we could speak about culture and not ordinary views on the history of the world. It was very interesting and useful for young people, because now many of us have friends from England, USA, Canada. I think that ESS is a possibility for students to show their abilities and skills. We spent our free time in interesting ways. We developed our acting talents. We sang songs, played very amusing games and watched funny cartoons and films. Thank you very much.”
