UCU Rector Receives Antonovych Award

Lviv – Fr. Borys Gudziak, Ph.D., rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in western Ukrainian Lviv, received an award from the U.S.-based Tetiana and Omelian Antonovych Foundation. The honor was presented to him on 19 May 2007 at the Antonovych Palace of Arts of the V. Stefanyka Library of the Academy of Sciences in Ukraine. The monetary value of the award is US $ 10,000. Fr. Gudziak hopes to use the award to help educate students from eastern Ukraine. Read more...

Construction on UCU “University Town” to StartLviv— The ceremony of blessing the cross on the construction site of the “university town” for the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in western Ukrainian Lviv will happen on 22 May. Lviv – “The strength of the individual and the whole people is in their sobriety…” These words of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) from 1901 to 1944, became the motto of the open conference “Problems of alcoholism: State of affairs, treatment and pastoral help,” devoted to the Day of the Sick, which took place on 27 April 2007. It was organized by the Commission on Matters of Health Ministry of the Lviv Archeparchy of the UGCC and supported by the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU). Read more...


International Colloquium “Ecumenism, Interreligious Dialogues and Fundamentalisms”

At the start of the 21st century interreligious dialogue has become one of the most pressing questions. The efforts of Muslim Turkey to enter the European Union, the sharpening of the conflict in Palestine, and the war in Iraq has given it particular urgency. Choosing the course of European integration, Ukraine has found itself in the center of the problem. The International Colloquium “Ecumenism, Interreligious Dialogues and Fundamentalisms,” which will be held from 20 to 23 April at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU), is dedicated to thinking through these issues. UCU’s Institute of Ecumenical Studies (IES), the French Embassy in Ukraine, and the World Council of Churches are the co-organizers of the event. The heart of the problem on which the colloquium will work is expressed by the main organizer, the director of the IES, Dr. Antoine Arjakovsky: “The myth about civilization as a factor in war, that is, the belief in an inevitable war between Islamic civilization and Christian civilization is being spread more and more in the consciousness of our world.” Read more...

UCU Rector Re-InauguratedLviv — The inauguration of Fr. Borys Gudziak, Ph.D., for his second five-year term as rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in western Ukrainian Lviv was held on 16 April 2007. Among those participating in the festivities were Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), Archbishop Ihor Vozniak of Lviv (seen in photo), and Bishop Hlib Lonchyna, assistant to the head of the UGCC, and representatives of other educational institutions and the government. Ukraine to be First Post-Soviet Country with L’Arche CommunityLviv – In three years, western Ukrainian Lviv will have the first house in the former USSR of L’Arche, the international movement of Christian communities for those with developmental disabilities. So said Zenia Kushpeta, head of the founding board of the L’Arche community in Lviv, at a press conference on 7 March 2007. The project to establish a L’Arche community in Ukraine is being coordinated by the Emmaus Center of the Ukrainian Catholic University. Read more...


UCU Holds Conference in Lviv on Post-Abortion Syndrome

Lviv – On 28 February 2007 in the conference hall of the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in western Ukrainian Lviv, a conference on post-abortion syndrome was conducted. It was initiated by UCU’s Institute of Marriage and Family Life. Participants analyzed the position of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) regarding unborn children and the church’s role in the moral healing of families in which abortion has been committed.
