New Project Starts with Prayer

New Project Starts with Prayer 19.09.2008, [17:04] // news // info

A procession of the community and a prayer service on the site of the construction of the university chapel on Stryiskyi Street in Lviv marked the start of the new liturgical and academic year and a new building project for the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU). The event happened on 15 September 2008.

A massive project to build a new campus for UCU started with the construction of a small wooden church designed by Lviv architect Roman Sulyk.

As Fr. Borys Gudziak, Ph. D, the rector of UCU, noted in his word of greeting: “We have very much evidence that God is always with us, with the university, with our Church, our people. Certainly, a great trial is before us, but the fact that the new campus is starting with the building of a church with the blessing of Patriarch Lubomyr Husar and Lviv Archbishop Ihor Vozniak is a sign that we are starting this great matter with the Lord.”

The participation of people of good will who have already made donations for the construction of this church demonstrated the importance of the project. The wood for the chapel was given by the Regional Administration of Forestry, and noted companies like SoftServe, Halnaftohaz, and CredoBank have already demonstrated their support. Myroslav Senyk, head of the Lviv Regional Council, and his son and nephew made personal donations for the building of the chapel. The chapel which is now under construction will be not only for students but serve as a parish for faithful in the area.

In coming years, in addition to a church, the university plans to build student dormitories and a pastoral complex which will serve various pastoral and social projects of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and the area in general. On the land which Pope John Paul II blessed during his visit to Lviv in June 2001, there will also be a library, computer labs, conference halls, and a museum.
