The Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) is “of a very high academic level with Catholic and Orthodox professors and students.” So said Cardinal Walter Kasper, president of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity, speaking about Catholic-Orthodox relations in an interview published by the American newspaper “Our Sunday Visitor” on 3 February 2008.
Cardinal Kasper visited UCU during the visit of Pope John Paul lI to Ukraine in June 2001, when it was called the Lviv Theological Academy, so he referred to it as an academy and mentioned the “good ecumenical program in the academy of Leopoli.” “Leopoli” is the Italian name for the city of Lviv.
