UCU Leaders Participate in Conference on Orthodox Priest Born in Mykolaiv

An Orthodox priest who served Russian émigrés to France in the 1920s and early 1930s was the subject of a conference, “Alexander Elchaninov, Orthodox Priest and Historian of Religion,” held in southern Ukrainian Mykolaiv on 1-2 May 2006. Mykolaiv was Fr. Elchaninov’s home town. The Ukrainian Catholic University was represented by Dr. Antoine Arjakovsky, director of its Institute of Ecumenical Studies; Fr. Dr. Mykhailo Dymyd, director of the Institute of Canon Law; and Prof. Mykhailo Petrowycz, head of UCU’s Faculty of Theology.
The conference was organized by the Ukrainian Christian Academic Society, of which Dr. Arjakovsky is the co-administrative secretary. He delivered a report on “Elchaninov as a Historian of Religion.”
Fr. Elchaninov is an outstanding figure in the development of Orthodox theology in the Russian Empire and abroad. His personality and theological heritage made a great influence on the development of all Orthodoxy of the 20th century; therefore the Patriarchate of Constantinople is considering his candidacy for canonization.
One of the important decisions of the conference was to conduct in Mykolaiv a more large-scale international conference in memory of Fr. Elchaninov with the participation of his relatives and famous religious thinkers of different jurisdictions from the CIS countries and abroad (including France, Italy, England, and the USA).
