Academics

Education at the Ukrainian Catholic University is directed at the student's intellectual and spiritual growth, the acquisition of fundamental knowledge and self-fulfillment. It is based on the principle that learning is not just a process of accumulating information: it also forms certain spiritual and social values, its affects moral behavior and critical understanding, it develops the sense of personal responsibility.

The goal of education at the University is to prepare students for a wide sphere of professional activities, to provide them with the necessary basic knowledge to continue their studies, to bring up well-rounded human beings for life in the multi-faceted modern world.

The University model of education puts special emphasis on:

  • mastery of the special skills necessary for scholarly research
  • performing written assignments
  • learning foreign languages
  • participating in various extra programs and activities which encourage contact with other educational communities and social groups
  • gaining the level of higher education necessary for further study in educational institutions in and outside of Ukraine

In the academic year 2001-2002 there are over 900 students in the various programs of the Ukrainian Catholic University. There are 105 faculty members.

Students of the Ukrainian Catholic University are invited to participate either on a part-time or a full-time basis in the following programs:

  • Theological education for lay people are provided by the Lviv Campus Program.
  • Candidates to the priesthood are trained at the Seminary of the Holy Spirit. See Seminary Program
  • Future catechists and Christian ethics instructors can take part as external students in the program of the Catechetic Pedagogical Institute. For those who cannot participate in the daytime courses, there is an Evening School in Theology.
  • All students have access to the summer programs, which include: summer school in foreign languages in an appropriate environment, retreats at the Studite Monastery of Univ for enriching the understanding and individual experience of the Chrisitian spiritual tradition, pastoral practice in Eastern Ukraine, etc.

As accredited by the Congregation for Catholic Education in 1998, the degree of Ukrainian Catholic University meets internationally recognized standards.
